Have you heard of the Helix Bridge (also known as the double helix bridge) in Singapore? Well, you may not have heard of it likely because the entire bridge was only officially opened recently, on July 18th 2010. The DNA-inspired bridge has been claimed to be the world’s first in architectural and engineering bridge design.

It has been built as a iconic pedestrian bridge that links the Marina Centre with Marina South in Marina Bay area, and set to transform the Singapore city landscape. The 280m bridge is also meant to complement as a walkway directly linking to Marina Bay Sands Singapore as well as Gardens By The Bay too.

So what’s so special about this bridge then? Well, we would expect to see not only recreational and entertainment but also community, arts and linking cultural facilities in this area. At its entrance is Singapore very first art park, the Youth Olympic Park and as you stroll along the walkway, it is a gallery where you would appreciate the exhibitions of kids’s drawings and paintings.

Taking as long as 2 years to complete, it comes with the most unique design with 2 helix (a minor and a major) that spiral in opposite directions, formed by stainless steel tubes to provide shade to the pedestrians.

What will really amaze you is it’s night view. A series of lights will illuminate the entire bridge to create a special visual experience for you by highlighting the double-helix structure. And of course, these lights can be programmed to create different moods for different celebrations so you will expect to see something that you usually don’t see easily.

All it takes is less than 5 minutes to walk the entire length and while doing so, be sure to admire the Singapore’s skyline as well as events taking place in the Marina Bay area.
